Choosing & Using Baby Formula

The Formula Best Suited for Your Child's Health

There is no doubt that breast milk is the most preferred and the best choice for feeding the infant. But not always is a mother and child receptive to this option. In such cases, the other best alternative is formula milk and by no means it is an inferior option.

The formula milk is in fact prepared in guidance of the child care experts and hence proper care is taken of the infants requirements. Thus, most of the infant formulas available in the market today are nutritious and safe.

Earlier, choosing a formula for the baby was a relatively easy task. There were only a handful of varieties you had to choose from, like, an elemental formula, soy based formula and the formula based on cows milk. Today, however, apart from these basic types of formula milks you have other options like preemies formula, formulas supplemented with ARA and DHA and the formula milk that is lactose free.

Among the many types of formula milk, the formula milk that is soy based is a preferred and healthy choice. This formula is best suited for those babies who lack sufficient enzyme that is required to break down the lactose, which a natural sugar that is found in cow's milk. Thus, soy formula works out to be the best option here. So while buying the milk, ensure that you buy the soy formula and not the soy milk. Soy milk is not an appropriate option for newborns.

For babies who are allergic to milk in some way, the specialized formula known as the protein hydrolysate is the alternate option. In this formula the protein is already broken down into products which it would result in after natural digestion. This milk is specially beneficial for those babies which are allergic to milk or have a family history of milk allergies.

Apart from the general ingredient categories, there are many other types of formulas for infants. The only difference between these various categories is that of cost and convenience.

If we talk about the least expensive, then it is the powdered formula. This formula is designed to easily mix with water. It very convenient to prepare this formula as it can easily be mixed to tap water and is also safe for the child. Thus, apart from being convenient, it is also cost effective. Many parents though prefer to use this formula with bottled water in order to ensure purity. This in some way could eliminate the cost advantage.

The other type available for use is the concentrated liquid formula. This formula can also be easily mixed with water. Thus it has the advantage of easy preparation but as in the case of powdered formula, even this requires perfect and careful measurement. In order to ensure maximum nutrition and easy digestion, it is important that the ratio of formula to water is correct.

The most convenient option that you can choose to feed your baby is the ready to use formula. It can be used instantly to feed the baby as it is pre-mixed to the perfect form and concentration. It can be fed either warm or cool, depending on what your baby prefers. Because of its high convenience factor it is the most expensive.

You may come across some formula milk that says 'enhanced', which means that the formula contains DHA and ARA. These ingredients are found in natural breast milk. Though these are safe for the baby, it has not yet been proved how much benefit they hold for your child.

Thus, all the formula milks available for your child are safe and equally nutritious. The requirement for all these formulas are also the same. All the formulas should be prepared in sterile and clean utensils. Also ensure that you clean your hand before you feed the baby.

Ensure that you follow the instructions strictly when preparing the formula. When it comes to quantity, feed the baby only what it wants.
